Secondary 1 – Biology: Ecosystem
In an engaging Biology lesson this week, students showcased their understanding of ecosystems through a collaborative project centered on creating mini ecosystem posters. Working in small groups, students were tasked with designing a detailed ecosystem representation on A3 paper, integrating both scientific concepts and creativity.
Students began by identifying and listing key components of ecosystems, including biotic factors such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, and abiotic factors like sunlight, water, soil, and temperature. This foundational step ensured that students could recognize essential ecological elements.
Students categorized these components and illustrated how they interact within their chosen ecosystem. They demonstrated understanding by organizing relationships such as predator-prey interactions and environmental influences on living organisms. Each group analyzed the roles of organisms within the ecosystem by identifying their ecological niches.
Students also constructed food chains, showing the flow of energy from producers to consumers and decomposers. This required reasoning and justification, as students explained how each organism contributes to ecosystem balance.
Students synthesized their knowledge into a comprehensive visual product—the mini ecosystem poster. Some groups extended their thinking by considering potential environmental changes and their impact on the ecosystem.
