Primary 6 – Mathematics: 2D Shapes Creations

Primary 6 students explored their understanding in learning 2D Shapes and Angles topic by making a small product which has 2D Shapes as the main characteristic. Students had options that could be the basic ideas of the product. There were quadrilaterals, circles, triangles and angles concept to support their creations.

Students drafted their ideas to record the plan. They wrote the product’s name and designed the picture to match it with expected product that will be created. They also divided the responsibilities in group to prepare the task equipment and how to cope with the process. It’s a challenge for students since they had to gather their friends’ ideas and follow up their imagination into something tangible with the available materials at home. After the creation done, students presented their work in front of their friends and explored more what they know about the product’s characteristics.

This activity helped students improve their creativity. They connected their creations with the Maths knowledge that they have learnt as well as proofing that the concepts are in lines with their product. Moreover, this activity developed their empathy, especially when they have teammates with different ideas or characters. They also learnt how to be more patient in realizing the design that they have planned with their friends.

In addition, students discovered how rewarding it feels to create something original and see the results of their own hard work, which build their motivation to learn Maths more. Presenting their product also helped them see the value of sharing ideas confidently. Beside the confidence, the process through also encouraged students to learn explaining their thinking and experience clearly to others.
