Primary 6 – IPC: Mindful Yoga Breathing Class with P5
As part of their ongoing IPC: Brainwave learning journey, P6 students organized a Mindful Yoga Class, inviting P5 students and several teachers to participate. The class aimed to promote mindfulness through yoga and proper breathing techniques. Students were divided into various roles, including master of ceremony (MC), yoga instructors, and oxygen level monitors, ensuring the event ran smoothly.
In preparation for the class, the P6 students created and distributed invitations to both students and teachers, encouraging participation by sharing the benefits of mindful yoga and outlining the DOs and DON’Ts for the session.
On the day of the event, the MCs opened the class by greeting the participants and explaining that their IPC studies included the concept of metacognition, with mindfulness being a key component. They further elaborated on mindfulness, its benefits, and how mindful breathing could enhance focus and overall well-being. The MCs also demonstrated the correct use of an oximeter, a device for measuring oxygen levels.
Before starting the yoga practice, participants were invited to check and record their oxygen levels. The yoga session then proceeded with a series of mindful breathing exercises paired with poses such as the mountain, tree, and flamingo. Afterward, the participants’ oxygen levels were measured again, and the results were shared.
In concluding the session, the P6 students emphasized the importance of breathing as a strategy for mindfulness. They explained that nasal breathing can increase oxygen intake, leading to better focus and reduced fatigue, which ultimately supports overall health and well-being.
Both the P6 students and the participants were highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout the activity. Not only did they learn proper breathing techniques, but they also gained valuable insights into how these practices could be applied in their daily lives to enhance mindfulness and promote physical and mental health. ***
