Primary 5 – Science: Study about the Movement of the Earth and Satellite

P5 students learnt about the movement of the Earth and how the Earth experience difference seasons throughout a year in Science. The aim of this learning is to know how the Earth orbits the Sun and how tilt of the Earth causes difference seasons. Moreover, they investigated about Satellite and its function for their daily life.

At first, students were asked to define the correct Solar System model by observing two different Solar System models between The Copernicus Model Solar System and The Ptolemy Solar System, they also shared their reason. After the discussion, teacher gave confirmation the correct model of Solar System. Through this learning activity, students got information about the Movement of the Earth around the Sun and the facts of it. Furthermore, they found out the effect of the Earth’s tilt causes different seasons on Earth through 3D model. Students were asked to define the season might happen based on the Earth’s tilt and amount of the sunlight. They also tried to know about the type Satellite and its function to our daily life.

Through this material, students get deeper understanding about the facts about Earth, Moon and Sun’s movement. Not only understand they could also link that the Earth’s tilt causes seasons changes on Earth. Moreover, P5 students could connect the function of human-made satellite to their daily life, especially help them in communication and give direction when they want to go from one place to another place.

This activity also gives a chance for students to know how the Earth’s orbit affect on the life, especially for them who live in equator territories. They understand that Earth’s tilt also affect to Indonesia even tough Indonesia doesn’t belong to any hemispheres. This information will build their knowledge to be aware of seasons changes in Indonesia. Students can also use this information to understand more how the satellites are involved when they use Google maps to give them direction. ***
