Primary 5 – Science: Student Do Sound Experiment in Science Class
P5 students learnt about how sounds are made and how the sound has different pitch and volume. To strengthen their knowledge, student conducted an experiment about how things can make a sound with different volume by plucking or hitting it. The aim of this experiment was to find out how things around them could produce the sounds and to know the volume level of the sound by using sound meter. Through this experiment, students were led to think about the impact of listening loud sound for their hearing.
At first, student recalled back their knowledge about how the sound is made and how it has different volume. Teacher provided three posts with three different things. First post was measuring ukulele; second post was measuring tuning forks; third post was measuring things around them, such as steel pencil case, pencil, book, etc. Then, teacher divided them into small groups. Each group measured the things provided in turn. In order to know the volume level, students needed to measure the volume and recorded it carefully. Therefore, they could differentiate the volume level. Then, students were asked to differentiate whether the sounds were safe for our hearing based on the volume level and discussed the impact of listening loud sound for a long period of time. In the end of experiment, student got confirmation that things around them could produce sound with different volume by touching plucking; hitting smashing it and listening to loud sound in a long period of time could damage our hearing.
Through student’s experience and result in this experiment, student could understand that things around them could produce sounds with different volume. Also, they learnt about the importance of measuring level of the sound in any place to make sure whether it was safe for their hearing or not.
Sound experiment helps P5 students to know better how sounds are produced and its impact for our hearing. It gained their awareness to keep their surrounding safe by controlling their voice and noises level at their class. Also, this knowledge can influence their future behavior, encouraging them to be mindful and become responsible in creating quiet and safe environment at home, in school and public spaces.
