Primary 5 – Maths: Trivestigation (Triangle Investigation)

On Thursday, P5 students were having an investigation about triangles. They started by recalling the basic properties of a triangle, before doing the investigation in groups.

During the investigation, each group was presented with one type of triangle and given the driving questions: the size of the sides, the size of the sides, and the line(s) of symmetry. The students measured the model triangle using their ruler and protractor before cutting it. Once the driving questions were answered, students make a conclusion of the three types of triangle based on the same sides, same angles, and line of symmetry.

Throughout the investigation, students not only discovered new knowledge about the types of triangles, but they used their prior knowledge of how to measure sides and angles to solve the driving question. They can see that each lesson is continuous and connected from one topic to another. Not only that, they’ve learn how to make a conclusion from the combined result of the investigation from each group.

This activity served as a reminder that prior knowledge is important to gain new ones, even from something as simple as finding various types of triangles. Exposing this activity to the students will be useful for them to make sure they keep their previous knowledge, because they will use it again in the future. ***
