Primary 5 – Maths: A Study of Favoritism
Primary 5 students had learnt about many types of graphs/diagrams/charts and how to organize the data into them. They’ve also done a small data-collecting activity by interviewing their friends. On this occasion, P5 conducted their own research about a topic of their choosing. This was a real-life application of data handling – but now, they were in control of their own way.
The research started with the students picking their own topic – some picked about sports, music, or any other topic. From there, they decided their goal, their methods, and the target of data collecting. After that, they design their research report, like an infographic, books, and even 3D models. In the report, they explained their goal, the diagram of their choice, and the conclusion of the research.
While conducting their research, they not only used their communication and data organizing skills, but also in planning and responsibility. Each of them had their own goal to fulfill, thus giving them the responsibility to finish their task until the end. They used their planning skills to fulfill the goal, finding the best strategies and changing plans when needed based on their situation. This way, they learnt that even during unpredictability, they can still work on their goal with a different strategy.
This experience taught the students to always prepare before they do an activity, especially something as important as research. They learn to use multiple skills, like communication, data organizing skills, and even analytic skill to fulfill their self-made goal. That way, they are not just merely fulfilling a task, but also learning strategy management to accomplish their target.
