Primary 5 – IPC: Solubility Experiment

In the IPC unit on materials and their characteristics, P5 students explored the properties of solidsliquids, and gases. To deepen their understanding, students were given a group solubility experiment that allowed them to investigate how different materials interact with water.

The activity began with each group creating an experiment plan, which included identifying materials, predicting outcomes, and outlining steps for the experiment. After planning, students conducted the experiment by mixing various substances—such as saltsugarcoffee powder, and chocolate—with water to observe whether each substance was soluble or insoluble in water. Each group recorded their observations carefully, noting which materials dissolved completely and which did not.

After completing the experiment, students worked together to write an experiment report, documenting their methods, results, and conclusions. This structured approach not only reinforced scientific skills but also emphasized the importance of safety and accuracy in conducting experiments.

This hands-on activity was designed to strengthen students’ understanding of solubility and material properties. By engaging in this experiment, students were able to test and confirm scientific concepts they had previously learned in theory, which made the learning experience more meaningful and memorable. The students were excited to observe the results firsthand and enjoyed the opportunity to explore science in an interactive and collaborative way. ***
