Primary 5 – English: Drawing a Character

P5 students just learnt to elevate their imagination to a higher level in English lesson. They have been learning stories about Sinbad the Sailor in the entire Unit 6. The students found out that as a resilient sailor, Sinbad encounters unimaginable realms and the creatures within that forge him to be a stronger character. Referring to a description from the book as their guide, they interpreted the monster depicted with their creativity, adding touches like detailed characteristics and phrases to describe the monster based on their points of view and made it look more unique.

This activity was not just about unleashing their creativity – it also improved their reading comprehension to the story yet at the same time helped them pay attention to small details they might have ignored. This gave them an opportunity to visualize what they have read and transfer it into a totally different form of work.

Through this simple activity, not only would they comprehend an English text and creative, but they would also boost their critical thinking as they made decisions about the monster’s appearance and description. The critical thinking serves as a long-term benefit for them to solve problems they find either in school or daily lives.
