Primary 3 – Science: Light and Shadows

P3 students learned about light and shadows as a part of their Science learning activity. To start with, they were assigned to identify some objects made of different materials. Then, they observed if the material allows light to pass through them and classify them as transparent, translucent or opaque. Going further, they observed that when an opaque object blocks the light, a shadow is formed. As they have come to this understanding, teacher challenged them to observe if the distance of the light source to the objects will cast different size of shadow.

The students responded to the challenge enthusiastically. With their group they took any objects that can cast a shadow. Then, using a flashlight provided by the teacher, they started to observe if the size of the shadow that object casts will change as the distance of the light source changes too. Next, teacher asked them to share their findings and conducted a discussion on this topic.

It is interesting to see how the students get involved in the activity and were able to experience their own learning through the observation they did within the group. They actively took part in the learning journey to find out how different material allows light to pass through as well as learning the properties of shadows by deriving facts from their learning experience.

By having this activity, it is expected that the students will have a fun and meaningful learning experience as well as being more responsible towards their own learning in the future. It is also expected that the knowledge they have built through this activity will last longer in their memory and can be applied in their daily activity.
