Primary 2 – Maths: Place Value Cups
P2 students have learnt about how to place the digit in place value cups on Monday, August 11th, 2025. They did the activities in groups. By using the place value cups, students should decide the number of marbles to put inside. One of the cups was 10s (tens) place cup and the other was 1s (ones) place cup. Students were given some 2 digits numbers written in front of the class. They should put marbles in each cup based on the numbers given to them.
Place value seemed like a simple thing to learn. It is only talking about the digits in numbers, the place or the value of each digit. Yet, it was not that simple. Place value talked about where to place the digit and how placing digits in different places made so much difference in those numbers’ value.
At the beginning, some of the students get confused with the concept of place value and put a lot of marbles in the 10s place. Then, they got insight about how to place the digit based on the place value. The activities guided them to recognise the digit in each place value. Students were so enthusiast to join the game. Furthermore, having good understanding about the concept of place value would help them to add and subtract with bigger numbers in the future. It also improves their number sense which is useful beyond Maths lessons. ***
