Primary 1 – IPC: From Dice to Discovery: Knowledge + Skill = Understanding
In the previous IPC class, the students have learned about the concepts of Knowledge, Skill, and Understanding (KSU): if knowledge (what we know) and skill (what we can do) were combined together, they can help students to build understanding. The easiest way to remember this concept is by introducing the students with Mathematics addition concept which is recently learned in Mathematics. In the addition concept, when we have certain number, then we add with other number, so we can get more result. Meaning to say, when they have had knowledge about certain material, then they try to practice it regularly, the knowledge learned can be more understandable: knowledge + skill = understanding.
In this special occasion, the students were given a chance to prove this addition concept by playing dice in a group work. They took turn to roll the dice to get 2 numbers which later were being figured out with the same amount of circle colored paper. Then, in the group, they were discussing to find out the result of the total number they got. They finally could prove that when certain number was added with other number, they could get bigger number.
After that, during the reflection time, the teacher reminded again about the concept of KSU from the result of the game. The students showed great eagerness to conduct the game. This strategy is used to make the students easier to understand about the abstract concept of KSU. By doing so, it can be a good stimulation for the students that they need to put all knowledge learned into practice to make them more understand. ***
