Primary 1 – English: Exploring Fantasy World
On Thursday, Primary 1 students have been learning English with the topic ‘Fantasy Story’. They discovered what a fantasy story is, the characters, main characters, and the three parts of a story: beginning, middle, and end. The learning was based on the story of Aqsa’s Adventure, which was read aloud by the teacher. By listening carefully, they learnt how a story starts, develops, and concludes.
Students express what they know about the story by arranging picture cards from Aqsa’s Adventure in the correct order; beginning, middle, and end. This task encouraged them to recall the story, think critically about the sequence of events and build better understanding of story through pictures.
At the end of the lesson, the students worked in group to create a story title based on the arranged pictures. This allowed them to reflect on the meaning of the story, express creativity, and show how well they understood the concept of story structure, that is the skill that will support their confidence in reading and writing.
The activity was designed to help students not only understand fantasy story and the structure of a story but also identify its key elements. Moreover, learning through audio, visual, and fine-motor provided meaningful experience and help students make sense of abstract concept like fantasy story. A very basic steps yet essential to proceed with P1 learning style. ***
