Nursery – Maths: Let’s Count the seeds

In Maths lesson, Nursery students learnt to count objects and to understand concept of numbers 0-5. At first, as a continuation of their learning about vegetables, students were provided with collections of different vegetables seeds to be explored. They also compared the colours and sizes of those seeds. Students were triggered to share their knowledge on how those seeds grow into vegetables. After that, students practiced to count the seeds classically. They were also challenged to enhance their understanding about concept of number 0-5 by putting seeds on the provided soil as many as the number given. These activity required students’ ability in doing rote counting, recognising symbol of numbers as well as students’ accuracy in counting objects.

Using seeds as the real objects in learning concept of numbers, was aimed to provide students an engaging learning environment, for they could directly explore using their senses. It also gave students real experience and enabled students to make connections to their own lives as they tried to make sense of math concepts. Besides, it was expected that students will get meaningful learning experience that long last on their memory.

In the long term, this kind of activity nurtures students’ problem-solving skills, encourages logical thinking, and helps them apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations fostering lifelong practical competencies.
