Nursery – Maths: Investigating the frozen numbers

Nursery students conducted investigations and sensory experiences to learn more about the science behind their amazing power as well to review their number recognition. Firstly, students imagined that the mighty freeze character were coming to their classroom and froze some numbers. Students were challenged to take the small toy numbers that were frozen in ices. They were encouraged to use various tools to break free the frozen numbers. They eventually had more investigation of liquid and solid, by using bowls of warm water to break down the ices and take the numbers. Once they had found the numbers, students were also asked to recognise the number and to order the numbers from 0 to 6.

These activities were not only aimed to help students in enhancing their number recognition but also to exposed them to their senses as they explored the ices with their hands. It was also an opportunity for students to develop their cooperation with their classmates as they work together to break the ices. Moreover, students were also triggered to show their curiosity and build their critical thinking when they have to share their idea on how to break the ices easily, and to observed and compare the result when they broke the ices with their tools and the warm water. Hopefully, it will help students to build their confidence to recognise that they also have a superpower which is their five senses.
