Engaging Students in Real-World Data Exploration: P5 Family 100 Activity

To conclude Semester 1, P5 students participated in a creative and engaging activity inspired by the popular TV show Family 100. This activity was not just entertaining but also served as a hands-on learning experience designed to develop observational and analytical skills. A week before the game, students conducted surveys around Stadion Manahan, collecting data on common items such as flower colors, car brands, clothing and shoe colors, and popular food and drink choices among visitors and pedestrians.

Each student was equipped with a survey sheet to record their findings. After collecting the data, the P5 teachers guided students in organizing and categorizing the information, creating meaningful data sets to prepare for the game. The students were then divided into two teams—boys and girls. During the game, the teacher posed questions such as, “What is the most common flower color around Manahan?” Students took turns answering, with responses like “red” earning points based on the survey results. Answers reflecting the most prevalent data scored the highest points, while less common answers received fewer points. The losing team had to perform a lively dance to a fun song, adding an element of excitement and friendly competition.

This activity was carefully designed to promote multiple layers of learning. At its core, it encouraged students to engage deeply with their environment, fostering heightened awareness about their surroundings. Students developed essential skills in observation, categorization, and recall by analyzing and classifying real-world data. The game reinforced these skills and created a space for reflection and connection as students revisited their survey experience.

The outcomes of this activity extend beyond the immediate fun and learning. Developing a keen sense of awareness equips students to approach learning with curiosity and attentiveness, attributes that are critical for lifelong success. By nurturing this foundational skill, the activity fosters a mindset that supports deeper learning and meaningful engagement with the world around them. ***
