Early Year 2 – Math: Introduction to the values of money
EY2 was introduced to the subject of the value of money in Maths. As new material, the activities used to learn this theme are designed to make students enthusiastic and motivated when learning it. Students are introduced to the value of money using a certain amount of toy money, denominations of 1000, 2000, and 5000. This is done so that students who are just starting to recognise the value of money get information that is not too much. Students are also stimulated cognitively by linking the value of money with everyday experiences to make them able to do simple problem solving. They are given a problem: what if the value of the money they have is more than the value of the goods, and vice versa? In this activity, they collaborated with their friends to buy home furniture as needed. They also have to pay according to the value of the money they have. At the end of the activity, they were given a simple presentation and asked to tell their friends whether they still have the money or not. As a reflection time, the teacher helps the students to understand that we need to use the money wisely. We’d better buy the things that are important first. Sharing this mindset since they are still young learners is a part of the stimulus so that EY2 students have a better understanding of themselves about what they want or need. ***
