Early Year 2 – Learning Project: I Am a Story Maker (Day 1-3)

The EY2 students kicked off their Learning Project, “I Am a Story Maker,” with excitement. They began by watching a video of their Tickly Octopus performance and reflected on how they felt during the show. Based on the Tickly Octopus story, they were introduced to the structure of a story, focusing on the beginning, middle, and end. They explored how the Octopus caused a problem by tickling the Shell and accidentally making the pearl fall, and how the story was resolved when the Octopus returned the pearl. This helped them begin to understand how characters and events shape a story.

Building on this understanding, the students explored how emotions and problems can affect different characters. With the help of a “Problem Chart”, they imagined new story situations, such as a crying Anglerfish whose lamp had gone out or a worried Crab with sore legs. They worked together to think of possible solutions, learning to express empathy and develop narrative ideas. Each child then created their own simple story by choosing three characters and deciding which characters would appear in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

To bring their stories to life, the students created paper stick puppets of their chosen characters. They drew, coloured, cut, and pasted the characters onto sticks. This creative process was part of building a prototype in their learning project, allowing them to visualise how their story could be told through puppetry.

Throughout these three days, the EY2 students learned to recognise problems, think of ways to solve them, and create a prototype. These meaningful steps contributed to developing empathy, communication skills, and creativity. ***
