Early Year 2 – Integrated Learning: Making Windmill
EY2 conducted integrated learning through a windmill-making activity. In the English lesson, EY2 learned about windmills and their functions. Students were given examples by the teacher and could choose the size of their windmill (large, medium, or small) based on their preferences. They also practiced writing simple sentences in English to describe the colors of their windmills.
In Maths, students measured their windmills using paper clips, applying the concept of non-standard units. They compared their measurements with peers to see how the sizes varied. They also discussed why certain sizes might be easier or harder to measure.
In Arts, students decorated their windmills by coloring and collaging tulips, adding a creative and personal touch. Students reflected on why they chose certain colors and designs, connecting their choices to the idea of self-expression.
Integrated learning kept students highly engaged, showing them how lessons connect across subjects in a meaningful way. This activity also encouraged them to think critically about patterns and solutions, fostering skills that are useful in real-life situations, such as problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. Over time, these experiences help build students’ ability to see connections between ideas, apply knowledge in diverse contexts, and develop confidence in tackling challenges independently. The combination of practical and creative tasks also lays a strong foundation for future academic growth and real-world problem-solving, equipping students with the adaptability and resourcefulness they will need as lifelong learners. ***
