Early Year 2 – Exit Point Mini Chef: Making Traditional Klepon
To wrap up the exciting “Let’s Play Outside” unit, EY2 students became little chefs for a day. Throughout this unit, the students explored nature through meaningful experiences such as planting seeds, observing how plants grow, and learning how to care for the environment. They also discovered how different parts of plants can be used in everyday life, including in the making of traditional foods like klepon.
This hands-on cooking activity provided the perfect moment for students to reflect on what they had learned. Reflection helps strengthen memory, build connections, and deepen understanding. It also helps students feel proud of what they’ve experienced and learned.
While preparing klepon, the students practiced important life skills such as proper handwashing, taking turns, and cleaning up after themselves. These routines support the development of independence and responsibility. Rolling and shaping the klepon dough allowed students to use their hands in ways that strengthen finger muscles and support fine motor development, which is important for tasks like writing and daily task. Working in small groups also encouraged teamwork, communication, and the ability to wait and cooperate with others.
As the students discussed the ingredients, the steps of cooking, and the role of a chef, they developed vocabulary and communication skills. They also gained a better understanding of how food connects to nature and culture. Making klepon was more than just a fun activity. It was a meaningful way for students to connect what they learned outdoors to real life and to grow in confidence as they created something by themselves. ***
