Early Year 2 – Entry Point: Little Farmers, Big Learning
This activity marked the Entry Point of a new theme, Getting to Know Plants. The EY2 children were invited into a meaningful role-play as farmers, harvesting vegetables directly from the garden. In small groups, they followed simple instructions to collect items such as spinach, water spinach, beans, carrots, and mustard greens. This hands-on experience allowed them to connect language with action while building early understanding of where food comes from.
After harvesting, the children moved to the washing station to clean their vegetables, then helped to cut the vegetables with supervision. The process continued as the vegetables were prepared and boiled by adults, ready to be tasted later. Each step, from picking to preparing, gave the children a complete and realistic learning experience that linked classroom vocabulary with real-life practice.
Activities like this offer lasting impact. Children develop independence, teamwork, and responsibility while engaging their senses in a meaningful way. They begin to appreciate food, nature, and the effort behind it. More importantly, such experiences help children see that learning is not only something they hear, but something they do, feel, and remember.
