Early Year 2 – English: Learning About Air Transport
As part of the “Going Places” theme, students explored air transportation through a fun, hands-on activity that combined language learning, science, and creativity. The lesson began with an introduction to different types of air transport—including airplanes, helicopters, and rockets. Using pictures and sight words, students discussed the unique features of each vehicle, building vocabulary and developing a basic understanding of air transport.
To deepen their engagement, students created their own spinning propellers using straws and colored paper. This craft activity allowed them to experience how propellers work, introducing them to simple scientific concepts about air movement and lift. As they spun their propellers and watched them land on different pictures, they practiced making simple sentences, such as “This is a helicopter” or “That is an airplane.” This practice reinforced their language skills, as they connected words with visual images and structured sentences.
This interactive activity encouraged students to explore science through play while also developing communication skills. By engaging in discussions, crafting their own propellers, and using complete sentences, they learned about air transport in a multi-sensory way. The activity successfully blended language development, scientific exploration, and creative expression, sparking curiosity and laying a foundation for further learning in the “Going Places” theme. ***
