Early Year 2 – English: Build It! Learning Through Construction Play
Today the children stepped into a new sub-theme, Build It!, with great excitement. They were introduced to different construction tools through pictures, sight words, and toy tool sets. Words such as hammer, screwdriver, pliers, and clamp were read aloud and recognised together. The story Pete the Cat: Construction Destruction then brought the theme to life, showing how teamwork and determination are needed when building something new.
Inspired by the story, the children worked in small groups to construct houses using the classroom construction kits. The process was not always smooth. Pipes came loose, walls fell down, and structures wobbled. Yet instead of giving up, they discussed, adjusted, and tried again. These small challenges became valuable opportunities to practise problem-solving, communication, and resilience in a meaningful context.
To consolidate their learning, the children drew the tools they had explored and carefully copied their names. This activity strengthened vocabulary, fine motor control, and early writing skills. More importantly, experiences like this nurture confidence and perseverance. When children build, rebuild, and reflect, they begin to understand that mistakes are part of learning, and that strong foundations take patience and teamwork.
