Early Year 1 – Science & Arts: Exploring Day and Night
In Science, EY1 students were introduced to the concept of day and night. They learned that daytime is when we can see the sun, and its light and warmth make everything bright. Nighttime happens when the sun is no longer visible, and the sky becomes dark.
Students were introduced to the idea that the Earth is always moving. The Earth spins on its axis, and this movement is called rotation. When our side of the Earth faces the sun, it is day, and when it turns away from the sun, it becomes night. They also learned that it takes 24 hours for the Earth to complete one full turn.
To support their understanding, students explored this concept using a flashlight and a globe. The flashlight represented the sun, while the globe represented the Earth. By shining the light on different parts of the globe, they could clearly see how light creates day and darkness creates night. After that, they continued by making an Earth artwork by following the steps given by the teacher. Through this activity, they practiced following instructions while also expressing their imagination and creativity.
Learning about day and night helps students develop their understanding of the world around them. It builds their curiosity about natural phenomena, encourages observation skills, and strengthens their ability to connect everyday experiences with basic scientific concepts.
