Early Year 1 – Maths: Let’s count down with the astronaut
EY1 students designed their astronaut helmets using simple, everyday materials. They started with a paper bag as the base of the helmet. Then, they attached numbered bottle caps to the front of their helmet to represent the control buttons astronauts use in space. They had to paste the numbers in the count down order 5 – 1. They also allowed to add the decoration using their crayons. Once completed, students put on their helmets and embarked on a pretend journey through space, exploring planets and galaxies.
This activity was not only fun, but it also supported several important areas of students’ development. It strengthened their understanding about the concept of counting down and trained their fine motor skill. Besides, it encouraged creativity and imaginative play. By wearing the helmet they made themselves and participating in group pretend play, students gained pride in their work and practiced cooperation and communication. ***
