Early Year 1: Introduction to New Theme “My Toy Shop”

Y1 students began the new theme entry point, “My Toy Shop,” by bringing their own toys to class. Each student gave a short presentation, sharing the name of their toy and demonstrating how it works. During this activity, they practised speaking and listening skills while also developing the ability to think about the functions of objects.

Students further honed their observation skills as they explored their toys, noticing whether they needed to be pushed or pulled, how fast or slow they moved, and which surfaces—such as carpet or tile—allowed their wheeled toys to move most freely. This hands-on exploration encouraged careful observation, comparison, and reasoning about cause and effect.

Another key benefit of the activity was that it stimulated curiosity and encouraged questioning, as students engaged with objects familiar and meaningful to them. By connecting learning to their own toys, children built confidence, developed critical thinking, and strengthened their ability to investigate and communicate ideas in a playful, meaningful context. ***
