Secondary 3 – Visual Arts: Visual Storytelling

Continuing with the theme Art and Social Commentary, Secondary 3 students created stories based on real-life social issues through a visual storytelling competition. The learning process began with a class discussion on how to visualise their stories through different forms of performance art, such as short dramas, acting, or dance. These performances were enhanced with supporting elements including costumes, props, and music.

The teacher then divided the students into pairs, where they collaborated to draft storylines and develop their performance plans. Students proceeded to design and create the props and crafts needed for their presentations. Throughout the process, they received peer feedback using structured worksheets provided in each session, helping them reflect and refine their work.

This complete cycle of learning—gathering ideas, developing concepts, writing stories, sketching plans, creating materials, and finally presenting—was designed to enhance students’ artistic potential and build their confidence in sharing their work with a wider audience.

In addition to fostering creativity and self-expression, the activity encouraged students to think critically about social issues and to explore how art can be used as a tool for commentary and awareness. The feedback they received played a key role in helping them identify their strengths and recognise areas for improvement, making the learning experience both meaningful and reflective. ***
