Secondary 3 – OLP: The journey to be impactful learners

Secondary 3 students participated in an engaging Outdoor Learning Program (OLP) at Kampus Kopi in Banyuanyar, Boyolali. The program introduced them to a wide range of hands on activities, combining environmental education, critical thinking and real-life problem solving.

The first activity was the cattle farm, where students observed and learned about the process of dairy farming from cattle care to milk production. They also explored sustainable practices by studying how cow waste can be converted into renewable energy in the form of bio-gas. Working in groups, students took on a challenge by completing worksheets that required them to create driving questions and design step-by-step solutions for managing bio-gas as well as understanding the procedures of milk production.

At the second location, students took part in a practical workshop where freshly produced milk was transformed into a variety of dairy-based products. They documented the process by writing procedural texts and later showcased their creativity through posters designed to advertise their homemade products. The journey continued to the coffee plantation, where many students experienced a rural farm setting for the very first time. They explored coffee plants, analysed local vegetation and learned about the coffee chain process from cultivation to the final cup served on our tables.

Although the students had not expected such an immersive rural experience, their enthusiasm was evident. The activities not only deepened their understanding of UMKM but also provided meaningful learning opportunities that connected directly with their lives. Excited by the knowledge and experiences gained, the students expressed great anticipation for the next adventure. ***
