Secondary 3 – Maths: Explore Simultaneous Equations Through Real-World Problem Solving

Secondary 3 students had an exciting and hands-on experience as they explored Simultaneous Equations through real-world situations. After learning how to solve single linear equations, students were challenged to apply their understanding in a context they could relate to.

To begin the lesson, teacher displayed several snacks like macarons and coffee candies along with two price conditions:

* 1 macaron + 5 coffee candies = Rp 4,000

* 2 macarons + 3 coffee candies = Rp 5,900

These posters were placed around the Cambridge area and the Dining Room. Surprisingly, the puzzle did not just attract Secondary 3 students; teachers and students from other levels also stopped to try solving the mystery prices. The school hallway quickly turned into a small “math puzzle corner”.

In class, students approached the problem using different strategies. Some used the substitution method, while others preferred elimination. They were highly engaged—discussing, comparing steps, and checking whether their solutions made sense.

Toward the end of the lesson, teacher clarified the mathematical process behind solving simultaneous equations and guided students to consolidate their understanding. Students then worked in groups to design their own simultaneous-equation challenge using real objects; ranging from stationery to packaged drinks. These student-created challenges will be solved by their classmates in the next lesson.

This activity helped students see that mathematics is not just about formulas; it is a powerful tool to make sense of real situations around them. Students left the class feeling more confident, curious and eager to solve problems.
