Secondary 2 – Visual Arts: Symbols and Identity
Secondary 2 students recently engaged in a creative project under the theme Symbol and Identity. The learning journey began with a brainstorming session, where students reflected on their own persona—such as their character traits, favourite colours, and personal interests. Together with the teacher, they also discussed how well-known individuals and companies, like CR7, MJ23, Honda, and Mitsubishi, are instantly recognised through their unique symbols.
From there, students discovered that a personal symbol can be designed in many ways—through the use of initials that represent their character, or through images that capture the meaning of their own name. The teacher provided visual references on the whiteboard, and students later explored additional techniques by researching on the internet.
Each student then sketched their own personal symbol on A4 paper, accompanied by a short explanation of its meaning. After refining their designs, they recreated the final version on A3 paper, choosing their preferred medium—acrylic paint, coloured pencils, or markers—to bring their ideas to life.
This project gave students the opportunity to express their identity in visual form while enhancing their creativity and design skills. More importantly, the process itself was a valuable learning experience: from gathering ideas, discussing, sketching, and creating the final artwork, to receiving and reflecting on feedback from both teachers and peers.
By focusing not only on the final product but also on the creative journey, students developed a deeper understanding of self-expression and identity. Their completed works will be included in the Term 1 portfolio as a meaningful record of both process and progress. ***
