Secondary 2 – Visual Arts: Clay
Secondary 2 students recently explored the art of 3D construction using clay as their primary medium. The learning process began with a class discussion on why clay is an effective material for sculptural work, along with the various techniques used in clay modeling.
To kick off the project, students researched examples of clay creations—such as action figures, animals, or human characters—using online references. They then selected one design to focus on and sketched it on paper, laying the groundwork for their creative process.
After preparing their materials and tools, students began bringing their ideas to life. They followed their sketches closely, while also remaining open to making improvements along the way. Techniques such as coiling, pinching, pulling, and using molds were introduced to help them shape and refine their forms. To assemble different parts of their sculptures, students learned how to score the clay surfaces and apply slip (a watery clay mixture) to act as an adhesive.
For the finishing touches, students were given the freedom to choose how they would colour their final pieces—using acrylic paint, food colouring, or spray paint. Once the clay had dried, they carefully applied their chosen finishes to enhance the visual appeal of their work.
This activity encouraged students not only to develop their artistic and technical skills, but also to think critically and plan effectively. They were challenged to select appropriate tools and techniques, work through difficulties independently, and express their creativity through a tangible and rewarding medium. It was a meaningful experience that combined craftsmanship with problem-solving and self-expression. ***
