Secondary 2 – Maths: Algebra on the Go

In their recent Mathematics class, Secondary 2 students explored the concepts of equations, inequalities, expressions, and formulae through the engaging theme “Algebraic on the Go“. As part of this lesson, students learned to understand the differences and functions of these algebraic concepts. They also practiced solving algebraic equations and inequalities, becoming more familiar and confident in handling various algebraic problems through written exercises.

After ensuring that students had good concepts, teacher introduced the Algebraic on the Go project. This hands-on project allowed students to apply their knowledge by planning a trip with three friends. Working in groups based on their chosen destinations, the students began by thoroughly reading and understanding the project guidelines. They then conducted online research to find information about destinations, accommodations, transportation, and meals — all while staying within a budget of Rp 1,000,000.

This budget limitation served as a practical application of the concept of inequalities. Using the results of their research and calculations, they created a travel itinerary that listed destinations and meals suitable for their budget. The project concluded with students presenting their travel plans in pairs, showcasing their understanding of algebraic concepts in a practical context. This project is not only deepened students’ understanding of algebra but also demonstrated how mathematics can be applied in real-life situations that require analysis, planning and decision-making. Presenting in pairs also helped students build confidence, practice active listening, ask thoughtful questions, and provide constructive feedback.

The experience nurtured their ability to appreciate different perspectives and develop effective communication skills. Furthermore, it also strengthened students’ logical thinking, problem-solving abilities and collaborative skills. They began to see how algebra can be a valuable tool for financial planning and making decisions in the future, bridging the gap between abstract mathematical concepts and practical application.
