Secondary 2 – Chemistry: Designing a Procedure to Separate a Mixture
Secondary 2 students have experimented with mixture and separation. Based on what students have learned, they designed and wrote a step-by-step procedure to separate a mixture of salt, flour, apple pieces, and uncooked rice. They designed and tested a procedure using the equipment available in the laboratory.
Before they created the procedure, they had to test the properties of each substance listed. They tested one substance at a time and used a tiny portion to check: Can it be handpicked? Is it large enough to be trapped by a sieve? Does it float? Is it soluble in water etc? These challenging activities invite curiosity and encourage exploration into the fascinating world of chemistry. ***
