Secondary 1 – Maths: Learning Data Types Through Self-Expression
Secondary 1 students recently learned about Data in an engaging and interactive lesson. The session began with the teacher presenting a set of questionnaires for students to answer. Their responses were then displayed and visualized one by one, showing how different types of questions produce different kinds of data visualisation.
Teacher explained the main types of data: numerical (discrete and continuous) and categorical (nominal and ordinal). This understanding is essential, as choosing the right type of visualisation depends on recognising the type of data being collected.
Students practiced identifying the type of data from various sample questions and questionnaire options. To make the learning more personal and meaningful, they were also asked to create a self-portrait and write several facts about themselves, labelling each fact according to its data type.
This activity not only helped students grasp abstract concepts more concretely but also encouraged self-expression and creativity. By connecting data to their own identities, students learned that data is not just numbers and charts; it tells stories, represents people and can be visualized in many ways. ***
