Secondary 1 – Exploring Chemical Reaction: Investigate the Properties of Metals and Non-Metals
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Secondary 1 students conducted an engaging experiment. They explored the properties of metals and non-metals by reacting them with acids and observing the resulting pH changes. This hands-on activity was designed to enhance students’ understanding of chemical reactions and the behaviour of different elements in acidic environments.
The experiment successfully illustrated key concepts about metals’ and non-metals properties. Students could prove that metals are more reactive than non-metals when reacting with acid through the observation of bubbles formed and a fizzing sound that indicates the production of hydrogen gas. Also, the mixture of metals and acid tends to produce acidic solutions because it makes the blue litmus paper turned pink.
This hands-on experience reinforces theoretical knowledge and encourages critical thinking as students analysed their observations against expected outcomes. The experiment highlighted the importance of practical chemistry in understanding elemental properties and behaviours in real-world applications.
In advance, this activity becomes a valuable educational experience that combined theory with practice, fostering a deeper understanding of chemical reactions among students.
