Primary 5 students engaged in a creative and collaborative project to design campaign posters under the theme “Big Cities.” Focusing on Solo, a prominent city in Central Java, the activity encouraged students to explore the city’s unique attractions, including its culinary delights, souvenirs, famous landmarks, and cultural heritage. The goal was to create an informative and visually appealing poster that could promote Solo as a must-visit destination.
The teacher began the session by sharing information about Solo’s highlights and provided printed picture references to guide the students in developing their ideas. Students were divided into groups and tasked with brainstorming and discussing how to design their posters. Each group sketched their concepts, including both visual elements and campaign phrases that would invite people to visit Solo. This required them to carefully consider how to organize information, choose persuasive language, and create a visually engaging layout.
Once their sketches were complete, students worked together to add color and decorations using colored pencils or markers, making their posters vibrant and appealing. During this process, they practiced time management, teamwork, and decision-making, ensuring their designs reflected the group’s shared vision.
By presenting their completed posters, students demonstrated their creative thinking and communication skills while showcasing their understanding of Solo’s cultural and economic significance. This activity not only boosted their creativity in designing effective campaign materials but also taught them the importance of collaboration and persuasive communication in delivering a clear and impactful message. The experience provided a meaningful way for students to connect art, language, and social studies in a real-world context. ***
