Primary 5 – Science: Water on Earth

P5 students learned about the Water Cycle. They learned the continuous movement of water from the Earth’s surface to the sky and back to the Earth’s surface. By learning the process, they understood that evaporation and condensation have an important role in ensuring a supply of clean water for our planet. P5 students also learned that the water cycle is a never-ending process but it could be disturbed if human beings did not take care of the environment.

Based on the class discussion, the students identified that most water found on the Earth is not pure. This is because water can dissolve many substances easily. P5 students conducted simple experiments to get pure water, water that does not contain any other substances, using a filtration technique. They used gauze and paper cloth. For experimenting, students did the following steps:

Experiment 1: Using Gauze

Step 1: Prepare one empty glass and a glass of dirty water.

Step 2: Fold the gauze in a certain way.

Step 3: Dip one edge of gauze in the dirty glass and another edge to an empty glass.

Experiment 2: Using Tissue

The procedure is similar. We change the gauze into paper cloth (tissue).

By experimenting, they knew how to get pure water in case of emergency only by using paper cloth and gauze. ***
