Primary 5 – Global Perspective: Emotional Regulation Toolbox

In the Global Perspective lesson, P5 students continued their exploration of the puberty theme by focusing on emotional regulation. This session was designed to help students understand the various emotions that may arise during puberty and to connect these experiences with their own daily lives. The lesson began with an open discussion about different feelings they often experience, such as happiness, anger, sadness, confusion, excitement, and sudden mood swings. Through this sharing session, students learned that every emotion they feel is valid and part of natural growth.

After recognizing and naming their emotions, students were guided to understand that each feeling requires a process in order to be regulated in a healthy way. The teacher introduced several grounding techniques, including breathing exercises, simple meditation, and concentration practices. Students practiced these techniques together in class, experiencing how slowing down their breath or focusing their attention could help calm their minds and bodies. This hands-on experience allowed them to realize that emotional regulation is a skill that can be learned and strengthened over time.

To deepen their understanding, students were then challenged to design a personalized “Emotional Regulation Toolbox.” In this toolbox, they included three to four strategies that they found most helpful for grounding themselves during emotional moments. Each toolbox reflected personal experiences and individual preferences during puberty. Some students chose breathing cards and positive affirmations, others included journaling prompts, calming objects, or short reflection steps. Once completed, the class held a mini exhibition where students proudly presented their toolboxes and exchanged perspectives with their peers. Although each toolbox looked different, they all shared the same purpose: understanding emotions and knowing how to manage them wisely.

Through this meaningful learning experience, students not only gained knowledge about emotional changes during puberty but also developed practical strategies to navigate mood swings more confidently. We hope that by understanding themselves more deeply and recognizing healthy ways to regulate emotions, students will feel more secure, resilient, and prepared to grow through this stage of development in a positive and balanced way.
