Primary 3 – IPC: Making Waves

In IPC theme Making Waves, P3 students learned about sound. In this lesson, students got knowledge that sound is made when an object vibrate and sound travels through medium such as air, water or solid things in the form of sound waves.

To deepen their understanding about sound, students did an investigation to explore the concept of sound vibrations with tuning forks, water, guitar, and rice grains.

By using tuning forks, students were asked to tap the tuning forks each other and closely observed what happens. Then, they needed to tap the tuning forks again and touched them, teacher asked them what they felt (The tuning forks vibrate). Next, they put it in the water after tapping it and asked them what they noticed. (Water ripples)

The next investigation, students put rice grains on the top of cup wrapped with a clear plastic bag. Then, students played the guitar close to the rice grains and cup. After that, they observed what they noticed with the rice grains. (The rice grains shake)

In concluding this activity, the students wrote the result of the investigation on a piece of paper. They should be able to explain that sound is made when an object vibrates. This vibration creates a sound wave as shown in the tuning fork in water and rice grain activity and this sound wave travels through something.

The purpose of doing this experiment is to gather accurate data, which improves students’ ability to analyze what they see. Besides that, it helps children think critically and logically. By having those skills will allow students to solve the complex problems and adapt to changing situations.
