EY2 students explored measuring height using non-standard units – colourful cones! First, they learnt how to line up the cones carefully in a straight position to ensure an accurate measurement. They then worked in groups to count how many cones tall their friends and teachers were. Afterwards, the students compared the results, discussing who was the tallest and who was the shortest.
This hands-on activity helps five-year-olds develop early mathematical skills, such as counting, comparison, and understanding measurement concepts. It also builds fine motor skills as they place the cones accurately. By linking measurement to real-life situations, children begin to see how maths is useful in their everyday world – for example, when checking if an object will fit in a space or comparing sizes. Such experiences nurture curiosity and encourage them to become thoughtful problem-solvers, strengthening their ability to think logically and make connections beyond the classroom. ***
