Early Year 2 – Maths: Dimensional shapes

EY2 students took a deeper dive into ocean life, this time focusing on creatures that live in the ocean’s twilight zone, which is very dark. They learned about creatures like lanternfish, blobfish, and barreleye fish, etc. The students also had the opportunity to discuss fun facts about the animals and revisit safety tips for diving, especially the importance of diving gear.

To connect this learning to their Maths lesson, the students were invited to pretend to be divers. The tables were covered with black cloth to create a dark environment for exploration. They were given flashlights to help them find dimensional shapes hidden in the den. After the exploration, the students shared their findings and revealed the shapes. The students were also encouraged to share their feelings about being in the dark den and worked together as a team to arrange the 3D shapes into a pattern.

This learning environment was designed to provide students with a holistic learning experience. Using their imagination helped the students strengthen their logical thinking skills as they connected the information through play. Last but not least, they learned to collaborate with their peers to create patterns and share their different feelings while in the dark den, promoting empathy by being aware of and caring for others’ emotions.
