Early Year 2 – Maths: Clapping Patterns and Counting Backwards

Laughter and rhythm filled the classroom as the children explored number patterns through clapping. The lesson began simply. When the teacher called out a number, the children clapped that many times. They counted aloud together, making sure their claps matched the number. What seemed like a small activity quickly became an energetic and focused moment of shared learning.

The challenge then grew more interesting. The children created repeating patterns using numbers and claps, and later practised counting backwards from 13 to 0 in a steady sequence: “13, clap, 12, clap, 11, clap.” They had to listen carefully, think ahead, and stay in rhythm. There were giggles when someone lost track, but they encouraged one another and tried again.

Through this playful approach, the children were not only learning numbers. They were training their memory, sharpening concentration, and developing logical thinking. Recognising patterns helps children predict what comes next, an essential foundation for mathematics. Most importantly, they experienced that learning can feel joyful, active, and shared with friends.
