Early Year 2 – Entry Point: Playful Learning With Nature

EY2 students explored the world of nature through a hands-on planting activity. They began by exploring the shallots with their senses by touching them with their hands, feeling the texture of the bulbs, smelling their distinctive scent, and carefully observing their shape. Afterwards, they carefully put soil into their cups, planted the shallots, and watered them.

Through this experience, students also learned to name plant parts such as root, stem, leaf, petal, seed, soil, and water, strengthening both their language development and their understanding of living things. The activity nurtures curiosity, patience, and a sense of responsibility as students care for their plants. Over the next week, they will observe their shallots closely, record any changes in their observation journals, and share their findings with their teachers and peers. They are learning to make predictions, such as whether the root or the leaf will appear first, while developing an understanding of what plants need to grow healthy and strong.

Interacting with nature provides valuable opportunities for children to develop their senses, notice changes around them, and understand that caring for living things requires attention and love.

Through playful learning with nature, students are not only planting shallots but also planting curiosity, responsibility, and a lasting connection with the natural world.
