Early Year 2 – Bahasa Mandarin: Exploring Transport

In Mandarin class, the children began learning new vocabulary about transport: zhí shēng jī (helicopter), fēi jī (aeroplane), qì chē (car), chuán (boat), huǒ chē (train), gōng gòng qì chē (bus), and lún chuán (ship). In the previous week, they explored these words through reading cards, songs, stories, and simple games. Repetition through different activities helped them become familiar with the sounds and tones of each word.

This week, the learning moved into a digital setting. Through an online game, the children listened carefully to a spoken word and selected the correct picture or matching vocabulary. The activity required focus and quick thinking, as they had to connect sound, meaning, and visual recognition at the same time.

Using technology in this way strengthened listening skills, memory, and pronunciation. It also built confidence, as children felt proud when they made accurate choices. Experiences like this show that language learning becomes more meaningful when children hear, see, say, and actively respond, turning new words into lasting understanding.
