In a recent Science Club session focused on the theme of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” students explored how to create soap using used cooking oil (UCO). The activity aimed to demonstrate practical recycling methods while making something useful.
The process began with students carefully mixing water and sodium hydroxide, observing safety protocols for handling these ingredients. Once well-mixed, they slowly added the UCO, stirring the mixture thoroughly until it reached a dense consistency. Next, they poured the mixture into molds, where it would solidify over the course of about two weeks.
Throughout the activity, students were highly engaged, not only learning about the science behind soap-making but also understanding how recycling materials can have real-world applications. This hands-on project not only reinforced key environmental principles but also provided them with a creative and practical way to recycle. ***
