Secondary Maths Club

Maths Club has officially started its activities with an inspiring first meeting. In this meeting, teachers not only introduced what the students would be learning during this term but also explored their views on how Mathematics is present in everyday life.

The discussion began with a video showing an insight into the importance of Mathematics as the main foundation of knowledge development. In the video, it was explained why Mathematics is called the “Queen of Science”. The main theme of this term was the relationship between Mathematics, arts, and culture. Students were introduced to the idea that every musical instrument is capable of producing geometric patterns, as well as how natural phenomena, such as flower petals and snail shells, follow the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc.). Another interesting example is the wings and eyes of a dragonfly that form a pentagon pattern, showing that Mathematics is a universal language in various natural structures.

Students were invited to discuss their views on Mathematics. Many of them realized that Mathematics is not just about counting or memorizing formulas, but is a tool for understanding the world. In the discussion, one student said, “It turns out that almost everything in nature, such as living things, is a manifestation of the mathematical concepts that we learn”. Later on in the next meeting, students will be invited to understand more deeply about Mathematical patterns and explore the surrounding environment to directly observe Mathematical patterns in the real world, providing an interactive and in-depth learning experience about Mathematics in everyday life. ***
