Secondary 3 students explored linear function graphs, extending their understanding of simultaneous equations, which they had previously studied algebraically in Semester 1, into graphical representation now in Semester 2. They examined how two equations can be represented graphically and how the point of intersection of the two lines represents a solution. In a business context, this point was introduced as the Break Even Point (BEP), the condition where total cost equals total revenue.
Building on this concept, students were tasked with developing a business proposal. They were given the freedom to develop their ideas individually or with a partner, and several students expanded on business concepts they had previously created in their English project, where they designed product advertisements. They determined their business idea, calculated fixed operational costs including the salary they aimed to earn as well as production costs. They then decided on the profit margin they wished to achieve and used that margin to determine the selling price of their product. By constructing cost and revenue equations, they were able to identify the minimum number of sales required to reach the BEP. Based on their graphical analysis, students also designed daily sales targets and strategies to increase profit.
This project demonstrated how mathematics equips students to think strategically, make data-driven decisions, and plan their future with thoughtful and realistic preparation.
