Secondary 1 students learned emotive language that can be used to influence the readers’ emotions. After learning how words can influence readers’ feelings and actions, the students were asked to create a poster with a snappy title and emotive language, where they explored the power of emotive language and persuasive techniques. They were asked to design eye-catching posters aimed at raising awareness about animal protection.
Each student selected an animal of personal concern and researched reliable, trustworthy sources to learn about its situation, the threats it faces and the urgency of protecting it. Using this information, they created posters featuring a snappy, attention-grabbing title, a relevant supporting image and a persuasive message filled with emotive language to inspire action.
This creative task not only strengthened students’ understanding of purposeful language use but also encouraged them to think critically and compassionately about real-world issues. The activity successfully combined language learning with creativity, research skills and social awareness. ***
