Secondary 1 students engaged in a hands-on learning activity by creating terrariums. This activity allowed them to apply their understanding of the physical properties of matter.
The aim of this project is for students to construct miniature ecosystems. They were tasked with identifying the right material like: clear containers, soil, small plants and pebbles. This involved discussing what plants and animals need to survive. This practical exercise provided them with a unique opportunity to observe how matter interacts within a controlled environment.
By monitoring the growth of plants over time, students could witness the effects of choosing the right material regarding to the physical properties of matter. They were also able to recognize how it make an impact to the environmental factors such as humidity and temperature on biological processes, effectively linking classroom learning with real-world observations.
In conclusion, the terrarium-building activity was a successful integration of science that did not only enhance students’ understanding of physical properties of matter but also encouraged teamwork and critical thinking. As they continue to care for their ecosystems, students will gain further insights into ecological principles and the importance of maintaining balance within natural systems.
