Secondary 2 Chemistry : Separating Mixture and Paper Chromatography
07 October 2022,
Secondary 2 students experimented with separating a mixture of soluble and insoluble substances and paper chromatography. They were divided into 8 groups, each consisting of 3-4 students.
In the first activity, each group was challenged to separate a mixture of sand and salt based on the solubility in water by using laboratory equipment and the material provided. They had to discuss with the team members before deciding which experiment techniques to use.
In the second activity, they experimented on and tested red and green ink pigments using the paper-chromatography method. They used tools like paper chromatography, green and red marker, plastic cups, wooden stick, and a paper clip. Through this experiment, they found that green ink consisted of blue and yellow colors, while red ink could be separated into components like yellow, pink, orange, and violet pigments. The students enthusiastically conducted the activities and couldn’t wait to do the following experiment. ***
